16.05.2018 - Müllerthal
The first real trip took us to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on 16th May. Namely to the Müllerthal (small Switzerland of Luxembourg). A region in the northeast. Until 23 May, we stayed at Camping Belle Vue 2000 in Berdorf. The new young managers (2 brothers) are doing everything they can to turn an “Indian camp” into a beautiful, modern campsite for young and old. Beautiful walking routes leave from the campsite and 500 m further you take the regular bus. For 4 euros you can drive anywhere in the Grand Duchy for a whole day.

Day 1
After arrival we installed the motorhome in its place. The spirit level proved very useful here. A disadvantage of a steeply sloping campsite is that you have to bridge a large height difference to level the motorhome. The best solution was to place the motorhome at right angles to the slope. So we could do it with the two wedges we have.
An exploration of the campsite was soon felt in the calves.
Day 2
On Thursday 17 May we left for a nice walk in the woods (200 m from the campsite). In the forest, besides the old trees and beautiful rock formations, there are many caves where you can still see traces of prehistoric habitation. Between the rocks there is even an old open-air theatre where performances are still given today. Unfortunately the mosquitoes and horse flies were hungry. If you stopped at the river you were attacked from all sides.

Day 3
By bus to Echternach! We are in the centre in barely 15 minutes. The sun is shining, clean and beautiful town, friendly people. Small but beautiful with many attractions, including the old Benedictine abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord. Many terraces and of course good food for a very good price. We ended up in an Irish pub (no matter in which country, always a good meal for a good price) with… in the middle of the dining room between the cozy old furniture… an old Harley Davidson. Sublime!!!
Day 4
Have a nice day again. We depart along the panoramic route to Junglister, where a castle from the 12th century can be seen.
We then drive through the beautiful valley of the Zwarte Ernz towards Mullerthal. At the height of Reuland, plateaus dominate with a beautiful view of the landscape. We come across the old mill of Reuland “Reilandermiller”. This is now a restaurant.
A bit further we come across one of the most popular places.
The "Schiessentümpel", a small, picturesque waterfall in the Black Ernz. With its beautiful stone bridge and impressive rocks, this place is one of the most photographed motifs.

From a parking area further on, you can walk to the waterfall. Or by road, or through the forest. Do not forget your outdoor shoes!

Back at the campsite, we placed the wedges again! We don't feel like rolling out of bed.
Day 5
Sunday and… it rains, now and then hard. We walked to the water tower in Berdorf. The 55-meter high “Aquatower” has an exhibition about water and offers a spectacular and panoramic 360 ° view of the surroundings of Berdorf above (fortunately there is a lift) (in the direction you are looking, the place name is on the windowsill). Various activities are offered.
The exhibition, spread over two floors, on the theme “water and geology” is located at a height of 32 meters and offers a range of interactive stations with information about rivers, water resources, plants and animals … Also excellent for kids!
Day 6
Again we follow the panoramic route that takes us along scenic roads, passing places such as Larochette, Christnach and Girsterklaus where we visit the chapel. The chapel was built on even older foundations in the 14th century and is the oldest pilgrimage site of the Virgin Mary in the Grand Duchy. The partially preserved frescoes are very worth seeing. The watchtower of this picturesque chapel dates back to the 12th century.
If the chapel is closed, it is indicated where you can pick up the key.

We continue on the beautiful roads, no potholes in the road as in Belgium, but an overhanging rock. The "Priedegtstull" (Pulpit) on the CR 364 is a quirky rock formation, which owes its name to its appearance. This rock formation can be reached via a steep path, with iron steps here and there. You come back down via a narrow, dark path between the rocks. Good shoes and a light come in handy.
But especially careful with the camper: given the formation hangs over the road, it is best to drive on the left side of the road.

Because, YOU CAN'T GET UNDER IT !!!!! Make sure there is no oncoming traffic.
Day 7
To Echternach again, by bus! Nice weather and a lot of people because… the hopping procession is going out. This annual tradition, in honour of St. Willibrord, has been around for more than 1000 years. Always on the Tuesday after Pentecost. Young (about 6 months, on daddy's arm) and old (even with crutches) take part. Several thousand participants, divided over 40 groups, are thriving. In the past, pilgrims were bound by their feet and jumped three steps forward and two steps back. Today they hold a white handkerchief and form a chain. However, they now hop from left to right and so forward, all to the same melody (a real earwig towards the end of the procession), brought by the numerous harmonies, brass bands and other music associations. Never before have I seen so many clergymen and notables (fathers, nuns, cardinals, municipal councillors and even ministers) happily hopping together (most of them anyway). At the end of the procession, over 2 hours, a heavy thunderstorm breaks loose and… they kept hopping and jumping.
Day 8
Home, sweat home… in the rain. The first traffic jam of the week? Just across the border, of course, Belgium. The potholes in the road and the jungle on road signs are also / still there.
Summary overnight stays
Camping Bellevue 2000 - Berdorf: we paid € 15.80 / night (electricity and tourist tax included). The campsite was under complete renovation. New sanitary blocks. No service station for campers yet. However, emptying chemical toilet. We were allowed to empty the waste water tank over a sewer grate. We had to fill fresh water with a jerry can! The owners promised us that they would definitely implement all the RV amenities. As well as flat camper pitches. The steep slope of the campsite can now cause problems. The weekend was busy and campers, caravans and tents were mixed up. Otherwise good overnight camping with very friendly and obliging owners. They even speak Dutch and English.

Want,  JE KAN ER NIET ONDER!!!!!

Dag 8
Overzicht overnachtingen
Camping Bellevue 2000 - Berdorf: wij betaalden 15,80€/nacht (elektriciteit en toeristenbelasting inbegrepen). De camping was in volledige vernieuwing. Nieuwe sanitaire blokken.
