Day 7
To Echternach again, by bus! Nice weather and a lot of people because… the hopping procession is going out. This annual tradition, in honour of St. Willibrord, has been around for more than 1000 years. Always on the Tuesday after Pentecost. Young (about 6 months, on daddy's arm) and old (even with crutches) take part. Several thousand participants, divided over 40 groups, are thriving. In the past, pilgrims were bound by their feet and jumped three steps forward and two steps back. Today they hold a white handkerchief and form a chain. However, they now hop from left to right and so forward, all to the same melody (a real earwig towards the end of the procession), brought by the numerous harmonies, brass bands and other music associations. Never before have I seen so many clergymen and notables (fathers, nuns, cardinals, municipal councillors and even ministers) happily hopping together (most of them anyway). At the end of the procession, over 2 hours, a heavy thunderstorm breaks loose and… they kept hopping and jumping.
