Antwerp

The entire Antwerp inner city and “Linkeroever” has been a low-emission zone (LEZ) since 1 February 2017. The most polluting cars are no longer allowed into this part of the city.
The zone is indicated by road signs and is valid permanently.

The measure applies to diesel cars that do not meet the Euro 4 emission standard (year of construction 2005) or the Euro 3 standard (year of construction 2001), but with a particulate filter. Cars with a petrol engine may only enter the LEZ if they meet at least the Euro 1 standard (year of construction 1992). The Euro standard (indicated with a number 1 to 6) is stated on the vehicle registration certificate (B: registration certificate). The higher the number, the less polluting the vehicle.

The LEZ does not apply to mopeds and motorcycles.

The admission conditions can be found on
slimnaarantwerpen.be/nl/lez/check-uw-voertuig/toelatingsvoorwaarden

Please note: the exemption option for disabled people on the basis of the right to an increased healthcare allowance only applies to residents of Belgium.

You can find extensive information about the LEZ on slimnaarantwerpen.be/nl/lez  and you can check whether or not your vehicle meets the admission standards.

The requirements will be further tightened in 2020 and again in 2025.

For vehicles that are not admitted, it is possible to apply for an exemption, to apply for a temporary permit, or to buy an LEZ day pass. This pass costs € 35 per day and can be purchased at a parking machine in the zone itself. This is possible up to 24 hours after entering the LEZ. This option may only be used 8 times a year.

Every vehicle entering the LEZ is registered with cameras. The license plate is compared with a database of authorized vehicles, with Dutch license plates the data from the Dutch RDW is used. Anyone who enters the LEZ with a vehicle that is not admitted will be fined € 150. The fine will be higher if it is repeated.

Owners of cars who are no longer allowed to enter the city can park at a P + R and then travel to the center by public transport.
Motorists with an adapted car and a disabled card are exempt, provided they have registered in advance via
lez.antwerpen.be.
Brussels

The entire Brussels-Capital Region has been covered by the low-emission zone (LEZ) since 1 January 2018, i.e. all 19 municipalities. The Ring (R0) is not covered, nor are any access roads to the Ring or to transit car parks.
Diesel vehicles with Euro 1 standard or without Euro standard are no longer allowed to drive in the Brussels LEZ.
As of 1 January 2019, diesel vehicles with Euro 2 standard and petrol, LPG and CNG vehicles with Euro 1 standard or without standard will be banned from the LEZ. Tables with this and later implementation dates can be found at
lez.brussels/content/mijn-voertuig.

A day pass (expected price € 35 per day) will become available in the course of 2018. A day pass can be requested for a maximum of 8 days per year. With this day pass, vehicles that do not meet the conditions for admission into the LEZ will still be admitted.

The LEZ does not apply to mopeds and motorcycles. A complete overview of exceptions can be found at
lez.brussels/content/mijn-voertuig.

In the event of severe air pollution, the authorities in Brussels can introduce extra measures, such as a speed limit or a ban for certain types of vehicles. Such a measure is announced in the media.

Detailed information about the LEZ in Brussels can be found at
lez.brussels.

Ghent

To improve air quality, Ghent city center or the area within the R40 will be a low-emission zone (LEZ) from 1 January 2020. The most polluting vehicles are no longer allowed to enter the zone. Avoid a fine and always check your vehicle before coming to Ghent.

Information about the LEZ in Ghent can be found at
stad.gent/natuur-milieu/lage-emissiezone-2020.

New zones

Over the past three years (2016-2019), the feasibility of introducing a low-emission zone in Mechelen and Willebroek has been thoroughly investigated. Various scenarios were examined, but the cost-benefit exercise eventually led both boards to decide not to introduce an LEZ on this scale.

Information about the LEZ in Mechelen can be found at
mechelen.be/lage-emissiezone-lez.
Wallonia

From 1 January 2023, a Low Emission Zone will be introduced across the entire territory of Wallonia.

You can find all information regarding the LEZ in Wallonia via the link below:
walloniebassesemissions  (this website is only in French)

The regulations, and especially with regard to the exceptions, are not yet 100% clear in 2021.

An exception will be a relief for many motorhome owners:
Vehicles with Euro norm 4 or higher, purchased before 1 January 2019, and insofar as it was not sold to third parties (still in the possession of the first owner), will still be admitted!

Antwerpen
