02.06.2019 - Carinthia (A)
Sunday 2 June: our big journey for 2019 is underway! We leave for Carinthia in Austria. After traversing it and exploring the famous lakes, we will continue to Slovenia for a tour.

As usual, we don't do more than 400 km a day. Our first stopover is in Germany, at the Herthasee in Holzappel. A camper place on a beautiful lake. The lake is apparently very popular with the locals. The adjacent, very large, car parking is overcrowded. After paying 1 € you can find a place around the lake to put your bath towel. Every square meter is taken.
The beautiful weather obviously plays a major role. It is just below 30 ° C. It’s very promising! Such temperatures in early June? What will the coming weeks bring.
Day 2
We continue towards Austria. On to our next stopover. Via the camperstop app I found a camper stopover in front of the camping gate of camping Naturama in Beilngries Germany. On the spot we found that the motorhome site had disappeared and made room for chalets.
Then go to the campsite. Obviously much more expensive! More details about this can be found at the bottom of this report in the overview of the overnight stays.
It's warm again. It is very quiet at the campsite. We stroll over a very nice bridge, which separates the second part of the campsite from the rest, towards the water. The river Altmühl flows just past the campsite. A very nice area for walking, but the mosquitoes decided otherwise. They took decisive action in the area and put on strike as much as they could.

Day 3
We enter Austria. Attention! Don't forget your toll sticker. In Austria you pay toll on most motorways and motorways.
In the distance, the snowy Alpine peaks sparkle in the sun. Destination National Park camping Grossglockner in Heiligenblut. A beautiful location in a valley surrounded by high peaks of more than 2000m. The good weather appears to continue and will produce high temperatures throughout the month. At our arrival we had 25 ° C, and this at an altitude of 1600m!
We are very enthusiastically welcomed by the owner, who apparently likes to come to Flanders and Brussels.
We are looking for the best place. Plenty of choice, the campsite has a low occupancy. We install and fix the sunscreen to the awning. A luxury object in this weather.
Day 4
We put on our high walking shoes and start a trip to the higher situated center of Heiligenblut. The village is not large and is a succession of hotels, pensions and holiday homes. Several shops, stubes and restaurants are located around the square.
The church is well worth the climb. From the adjacent cemetery you have a beautiful view of the surroundings.

The Großglockner, with its summit at 3798m, is located together with the surrounding three-thousand + tops further in the Hohe Tauern National Park. You can cross this national park with the motorhome. This via the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. This spectacular road, with its beautiful panoramas, was built in 1935 to attract tourists to the region and has a total length of 48 km. There are many hairpin bends and narrow passages on the route. It is doable 636 with the camper, but you have to be careful at all times. To do the route you pay a toll of 36 €! Finally, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, at the end of the route, is the place from which you can walk to the Pasterze (the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps). This parking is, again, only accessible via a narrow steep side road.
We decided not to do this route, no matter how idyllic it may be. The intention of our first week was simply to enjoy, walk and relax.

In the evening we enjoyed a meal in the campsite restaurant. The manager's mother is behind the stove. She conjures up beautiful, local dishes on the plate. Very delicious.

13.04.2018 - Probeerweekend Lembeke

Overzicht overnachtingen
Camping Malpertuus - Lembeke: 20,5€/nacht (elektriciteit 4€ inbegrepen).
Kostprijs 2€!

Rustig. Strand gemakkelijk bereikbaar per fiets.

In the evening we enjoyed a meal in the campsite restaurant. The manager's mother is behind the stove. She conjures up beautiful, local dishes on the plate. Very delicious.
Day 5
From today, the lakes of Carinthia are on the program. When checking out, the manager once again showed his enthusiasm about our presence. Despite staying there for two nights we only had to pay for one night!

The first lake where we stop is the “Weissensee”. The lake lives up to its name. Located at an altitude of 930m, the sun and the incredibly clear and transparent water provide a beautiful blue reflection. The shores, formed by white lime silt, turn pearly white (hence the name of the lake). Under a radiant sun we take a nice walk along the water, this in the middle of nature. Naturally, a refreshing beer at the end of the walk could not be missed.
Day 6
Today is Friday and on to the next lake, the “Millstattersee”. Since the Pentecost weekend was arriving, we were better safe then sorry and decided to stay for four days at our obtained pitch. This at camping Neubauer, directly on the lake. Due to the terracing of the streets, everyone has more or less a view of the lake. The only disadvantage of the campsite: there are no facilities for motorhomes. Seems like a problem if you stay there for several days. But like any good soldier, we could manage. Along the side of the roads are taps where water can be refilled. We drained gray water with a bucket and discharged it at the place for the chemical toilet.

It's scorching hot again. We relax in the shade of our awning. Lying by the lake was something for the real sun worshipers. In summer the water temperature rises to 26 ° C. Many sought cooling in the lake as a result, not me! I am always too cold. In the late afternoon we could fully enjoy along the water.

In the restaurant on the campsite they served very tasty dishes, but the menu was limited to three main dishes.
Day 7
Wake up blissfully with this beautiful weather. Outside people chat with each other. Our neighbors, a couple of Dutch, can always be found for a nice conversation.
Before noon we take the regular bus to Spittal an der Drau on the other side of the road from the campsite. A small town with, for a Saturday, noticeably very few people visiting or shopping. Most of the activity took place in the beautiful shopping centre near the station.
The proximity to Italy is noticeable in the architectural style. But the only significant attraction in the city is Porcia Castle. A Renaissance building that currently houses a folk art museum and a hotel. Then enjoy it on a terrace of an ... Italian restaurant.
Day 8
Today it is very hot again. The message is to do nothing and relax. A moment to calmly evaluate our first week. At the lake there is drumming to get a place in the shade under the few trees that are there. The restaurant terrace was our favourite place of the day.
Day 9
Again take the regular bus and visit the town of Millstatt on the lake. The old monastery, the monastery garden and the beautiful church appealed to us.
Back on the bus and further on we explored Seebooden, a slightly larger town. We strolled along the lake as storm clouds approached menacingly.
We decided to continue the day at the campsite. However, rain did not occur. In the meantime we had new neighbours. A couple of 90 and 93 years old! They had been brought to the scene by the daughter together with their caravan. When the old woman, after taking her daughter to the station, parked the car between our motorhome and their caravan, all the other neighbours, and us in particular, held their breath. She couldn't maneuver in the slightest. She must be a real danger on the road!
Day 10
We leave the campsite and drive to the “Ossiachersee”. The last lake where we "moor". From our place on the terraced camping site in Ossiach we have, like everyone else, a beautiful panoramic view over the lake. We book three nights there.
In the afternoon the temperature rose to 31 ° C. Dark clouds began to form again. This time the heavens were opened completely. A heavy thunderstorm broke loose. The water was splashing on the roof of the camper. The lake was no longer visible. The torrential rain was like a wall. After an hour it was over and the sun came out again. You could enjoy yourself on the shores of the lake again.

General impression Carinthia

Carinthia is a very beautiful region, certainly worth a visit. Nature is rough and intact. It is clearly the least touristic part of Austria. However, the region is catching up. The roads that are not always well-maintained are being fully addressed. The many beautiful villages make an effort to attract tourists. The campsites are, like in the rest of Austria, neat and well maintained and managed. But are absolutely not set up to receive motorhomes yet. Usually there is no service station, drinking water is provided, such as for caravan users, at the taps available on the campsite. Gray water cannot be discharged over a well. At most you can (if your camper is equipped) discharge with a hose.
The few camper stopovers that you will find in Carinthia are connected to a restaurant and have few facilities. You are therefore dependent on the campsites anyway.
With the exception of the more luxurious, most restaurants have a limited menu. But it is a very tasty kitchen and the portions are German.
You don't have to look far to shop. Every village, hamlet or town has its mini-markets with a nice assortment. The customer is really still king.
Day 11
We drive with the camper to Friesach. The medieval town is also the oldest in Austria. We walk into the city along the renovated city walls and the exhibited torture instruments from the earlier period. The main square is surrounded by well-preserved medieval houses. Most are painted in soft pastel colors. The many old buildings are scattered in the city. Bartholomew's Church and the Fürstenhof are by far the most interesting. The latter was once the home of the Archbishop of Salzburg, and now serves as the town hall.
If you look up, you can see the "Rotturm" just outside the city walls. Look a little further up and you will see the much larger ruins of "burg Petersburg" appear.
We reach the ruin via 100 steps, carved into the rocks (a serious climb). We visit the historical museum that is housed in it.
After drinking a hearty glass and enjoying the beautiful view from the museum terrace, we ventured down again. Not along the stairs. We wisely took the steep road that led to the centre.
When we got back to the campsite, we realized that our place had been taken by another motorhome! Apparently the designation of the places at the reception was a bit confused. No problem, we could immediately choose another place ourselves, with an equally beautiful view.
Day 12
Beautiful weather again. Ready to discover Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia.
In view of the fact that we lose our place on our return yesterday, we now took the necessary precautions. We had received a sign from the manager of the campsite that said “reserved”. I anchored this in the middle of our stand. Well, no one else will be standing here for sure!

In Klagenfurt we park on the motorhome stopover in the centre of town. We were lucky there was one place out of four available.
Klagenfurt is a nice city. There is a pleasant bustle. It is Thursday, so market day. We stroll into the centre through the stalls. We arrive at the "Neuer platz". The imposing new town hall shines here. The most beautiful sight on the square is the fountain: the "Lindwurm", a cross between a dragon and a snake. It goes from the new place to the old place. An elongated square with a number of beautiful renaissance houses and… the old town hall.
At the end of the square is the "Landhaus", with its two beautiful towers. The building itself can only be visited during July and August. There is also a very good restaurant attached to it. We enjoyed a delicious meal.
Klagenfurt was a very successful end to our Carinthia trip. And yes ... our place on the campsite was still available when we returned.
The next day we will continue our journey and drive into Slovenia. More about the continuation of our Carinthia - Slovenia tour can be found on the Slovenia page

Day 5
From today, the lakes of Carinthia are on the program.
