Many campers, however, ignore these weight standards and load everything they think they need. The result: a lot of overweight. They assume that there will be no checks after all. They also forget their own safety and that of their fellow passengers.
From a technical point of view, the motorhome provides sufficient braking power to bring a mass of 3,850 kg safely to a stop, provided the braking system is in perfect condition. However, it is a myth that this would allow you to be 10% overweight before being fined. This is not so. And remember, the heavier the vehicle, the greater the braking distance. Chance of breaking out into bends. The load on the tires with the risk of a blowout!
In the event of an accident, it may also be the case that the insurance will recover the costs from the policyholder for that reason.
You can take it from me, more and more checks are being made today. In June 2018 there was an action in Germany. On the motorway around Aachen just before the border with Belgium. Motorhomes and trucks were weighed! In Duisburg everyone is weighed on the highway
In Austria there are motorways equipped with loops and ANPR cameras (cameras with number plate recognition). You drive over the loop and are automatically weighed. You will receive an official report if you are overweight.
Slovenia! Regular check-ups
If your vehicle is being weighed and if you are overweight, you have to unload everything that is too much and leave it behind! Plus, of course, the fine, and they are no less:
An overview:
Austria: overweight up to 5% will cost you 90 euros. From 6 to 10% it goes up to 170 euros. From 11 to 15% it will cost you 210 euros, but there is also an administrative fine to be recorded personally. The maximum here is 5.000 euros. When determining the overweight, the costs for extra weighing can also be passed on to the driver as well as the costs for transferring to another vehicle.
Belgium: a tolerance of 2 to 5% (MAM up to 3500 kg = 70 to 175 kg) is possible, but certainly not the rule. According to the excess weight, the fine can go up from 110 to 330 euro with a maximum of 4,000 euro.
Denmark: for the driver of a motorhome of max. 3500 kg MAM (renter of the motorhome), the fine is 10 euros per % overweight. For the owner of that vehicle, an additional 20 euros per% overweight is added. For a vehicle of + 3500 kg, this is respectively 20 euros for the driver and 50 euros for the owner. So here's to watch out if you are lending your personal vehicle to family or friends.
France: if the vehicle is overweight, the fine quickly amounts to 135 euros, with a maximum of 750 euros. In case of overweight of more than 5%, the vehicle can even be confiscated.
Germany: for an overweight of more than 5% there is a fine of 10 euros for the driver and owner, for overweight of more than 10 or 15% the fine is 30 or 35 euros. So relatively "cheap". For overweight of more than 20%, the fine is already 95 euros. 25 to 30% overcharging, the fine is already 140 to 235 euros.
Great Britain: no matter how much the overweight is, the fine will cost at least 60 pounds (+/- 70 euros). The maximum here is converted around 6.000 euros.
Italy: the MAM of the motorhome must not be exceeded by more than 5%. Violations against this will be fined with an amount of 41 euros to a maximum of 1.682 euros.
Spain: for a GVW of up to 10 tonnes, the fine for overweight is between 6 and 15%, between 301 and 400 euros. If the MAM is exceeded between 15 and 25%, the fine already rises from 1,501 to 2,000 euros, if the overweight is more than 25%, the fine is 3,301 to 4,600 euros.
Sweden: for overweight of more than 1 (one)%, this already costs 2,000 crowns (+/- 200 euros). More than 20% overweight, that amount is already 2,500 crowns (250 euros), 30% overweight is 3,000 crowns (300 euros) and at 40% it is already 4,000 crowns (400 euros).
Switzerland: for an overweight of more than 100 kg, the fine quickly amounts to 85 euros. For motorhomes up to 3,500 kg, overweight from 100 kg to 5% (175 kg) quickly costs 170 euros. Motorhomes of + 3,500 kg that are overloaded between 100 kg and 5%, but are less than 1,000 kg overweight, it will cost you 215 euros. If the overweight is more than 5%, legal prosecution will follow and a driving ban may follow for foreigners. In any case, the overweight must be depleted.
The Netherlands: obesity will cost you 120 euros there, with a maximum of 470 euros. The 5 to 10% tolerance only applies to professional transport.
